This chapter elaborates on the biosocial technical systems. Its aim is to propose an analytical concept, Bio-Sociotechnical systems, to study the interaction between biological components from the perspective of communicable diseases, alongside the technical and social components in the context of Latin America. The analytical concept takes a systemic approach and proposes a framework to inform empirical studies on the behavior of communicable diseases emergences, spates, and epidemics based on observations in Brazil. The framework is inspired by the emergence of Zika and Covid-19, which were studied with the use of qualitative and survey data collection protocols. Such studies indicated the need to incorporate the biological component to the already stabilized Latin American concepts of Health Economic-Industrial Complex and Social Determinants of Health, so that public health policies can be better informed in their responses to current and future health challenges. These frameworks are analyzed alongside the Sociotechnical Systems and Biosocial approaches. A novel Bio-Sociotechnical framework has potential to allow analysis of changes in communicable diseases as a systemic component in the biological realm with interdependent changes in wider social and technical components. It is also convergent to new science policy paradigms that are more socially oriented.
