“Transversality” refers to an interdisciplinary ethos that navigates between conceptual and institutional boundaries without arriving at a holistic synthesis. This ethos utilizes knowledge from many fields but never presumes a new kind of masterful expertise. Transversality has become a keyword for philosophical and practical efforts for approaching the multifarious dimensions of the climate crisis in Brazilian environmental institutions. This chapter explores the history and use of transversality in Brazil as a case study for non-academic Latin American contributions to contemporary STS theory. Drawing on archival research and ethnographic observation with Brazilian climate analysts, it demonstrates that the continually emerging transversal ethos offers a unique response to the challenges of global climate governance. It is therefore an opportunity to both examine the limitations and potential of an appropriated concept as well as a Latin American conceptual innovation.
