The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated digital transformation across various sectors, with small and medium enterprises significantly increasing their adoption of digital technologies. This study aims to examine the impact of this shift on Portuguese enterprises, particularly in the tourism sector. The dataset used in this paper was drawn from the 2022 information and communication technologies usage survey, by Statistics Portugal, and it is focused on 771 tourism sector enterprises, specifically in the accommodation and food and beverage sub-sectors. Results unveil that despite some advancements, the tourism industry is still at an early digital stage and faces several challenges, including a lack of technology specialists and insufficient employee training. The sector also shows inconsistencies in its commitment to environmental sustainability, with a gap between eco-friendly practices and actual implementation. The findings highlight the need for continuous investment in technology and human capital to fully leverage digital transformation benefits.
