The Eco-Schools Programme has emerged as a deliberate educational strategy for all levels of education, from kindergarten to higher education institutions, based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It aims to promote sustainable development, contribute to the holistic education of students, in particular the formation of aware, engaged and responsible citizens, strengthen the school community and promote a positive impact on the environment and society. This research, carried out in a Portuguese public Higher Education Institution (HEI), is based on a case study using the Eco-Schools Programme methodology, framed within the qualitative paradigm and guided by an action research design. The study took place in the academic year 2023/2024 in Portugal and involved 175 participants from the HEI community. The results, although positive, show weaknesses in the participants’ environmental awareness on a number of issues, so it is considered that the implementation of the Eco-Schools Programme has a comprehensive and positive impact, promoting transformative education and sustainable tourism, benefiting local communities and visitors. It was concluded that there is a need to continue to develop educational actions, leveraged on Education for Global Citizenship, that enable change and build a more sustainable future. This research raises global challenges and calls for more work in the field of education, highlighting the Eco-Schools Programme as a pedagogical tool with the potential to fulfil the 2030 Agenda and as a cluster for the promotion of sustainable cultural tourism through environmental education.
