摘要
The influence of technology, the rapid digitization of heritage and new cultural intermediations have transformed the cultural tourism experience, generating new forms of consuming culture. As the elite position of high culture erodes, there is a pressing need for cultural institutions to profile new cultural tourists, tapping into emerging markets and adapting to the integration of tourism into the everyday culture of destinations. The changing nature of consuming culture has originated cultural tourism 4.0 making it important to know the new cultural tourists. In Portugal, the city of Santarém, known as the Capital of the Gothic, is characterized as a consolidated cultural tourism destination due to its heritage’s richness. The main purpose of this paper is to profile visitors to the historic centre of the city. Based on the ATLAS methodology, a quantitative approach was followed through a survey application to visitors to the city’s historical centre. The survey contemplated cultural tourist´s sociodemographic, motivations, accommodation, typology of visits and other behavioural characteristics. Results show that Santarém´s visitors come to the city mainly for leisure and cultural reasons, often travelling with family or friends. These visitors, who have a positive view of the city, frequently explore key sites like the Igreja da Graça and the Jardim das Portas do Sol, relying on digital information and recommendations from friends and family.
