Surface Characterization and Evaluation

During the last three decades, the correlation between surface topography and mechanical manufacturing has garnered growing attention. Surface topography serves as a crucial intermediary between the manufacturing process of a component and its intended functionality (Ramasamy and Raja in J Manuf Syst 32:514–22, 2013). To meet stricter tolerances and enhanced performance criteria, it is imperative for engineers to extend their focus beyond dimensions, shapes, and peak values to include the specification of various surface functional attributes.
