Nonverbal signals are a key component of the multimodal interactions central to sXAI. However, due to their inherent characteristics, these signals are often ambiguous, and the interpretation of nonverbal signals is highly dependent on situational context. Ambiguity can be introduced when the interpretation is inaccurate. In this chapter, we discuss factors contributing to ambiguity in nonverbal signals and examine how it influences the dynamics of an explanation. We then consider the role these factors play in the expression and perception capabilities of sXAI and discuss how to account for them in the development of these systems. Despite efforts to mitigate it, ambiguity remains inevitable due to the nature of nonverbal signals. Therefore, we propose strategies that not only mitigate ambiguity but also enhance the system’s ability to identify and resolve it. By adopting these measures, sXAI can become more robust in handling ambiguity in nonverbal signals.

摘要
