Affective states can influence the processing and delivery of explanations, making nonverbal signals of affect a valuable resource for sXAI. This chapter examines how the computational processing and generation of nonverbal affective signals can enhance human–computer explanations. It explores various nonverbal affective signals such as facial expressions, gaze, voice, heartbeat, and breathing, detailing the affective information they convey and their current as well as potential use in social XAI (sXAI). Additionally, the chapter addresses the challenges associated with interpreting each of these modalities.
