Teaching Chinese Syntactic Complexity
摘要
Buiding upon the findings about what Chinese syntactic complexity is and how it is developed across proficiency levels, this chapter focuses on how to teach Chinese syntactic complexity. The chapter begins by identifying the challenges in teaching Chinese syntactic complexity. It then provides a macro-level view of the developmental stages across proficiency levels, as well as a micro-level view into varied individual topic chain compositions by means of topic repetition via zero coreferentials. Next, it introduces a task-based and proficiency-oriented design to teach Chinese syntactic complexity. Last, two sample task series designed according to the SSARC (Simplify-Stabilize, Automatize, Restructure-Complexify) Framework are illustrated, each aiming to repectively aid the formation and diversification of topic chains for students at different proficiency levels.
