Progress and Prospect of Acid Fracturing Technology for Deep Marine Carbonate Reservoirs

Marine carbonate reservoirs are characterized by high temperatures, pressures, and sulfur contents, which pose significant challenges to conventional oil and gas reserve reconstruction techniques. The presence of H2S acidic gas presents a particular obstacle to traditional downhole operations. Acidizing or acid fracturing is an essential technique for advancing the exploration, development, and stimulation of tight marine carbonate reservoirs. We have conducted a comprehensive review of recent advancements in acid fracturing technologies both domestically and internationally. We have systematically organized and categorized the technical features, mechanisms, and key parameters of carbonate acid fracturing technology. Our analysis covers the methods, principles, characteristics, and applicability of acid fracturing techniques for carbonate reservoirs. We have also summarized the challenges associated with deep marine carbonate reservoirs including deep burial, high temperatures, high pressures, high sulfur contents low porosity and permeability as well as strong heterogeneity. Furthermore, we have proposed targeted acid fracturing strategies tailored specifically for marine carbonate reservoirs while recommending ongoing technical research in areas such as the action distance of acids downhole tool stability under extreme conditions iron deposition during acid fracturing establishment of targeted acid fracturing technology charts for typical carbonate reservoirs providing reliable technical guidance for the development of deep ultra-deep marine carbonates.
