Behavioral Computing for Human Factor Security and Safety in Infrastructure Construction

Infrastructure construction involves the engineering activities required to build and enhance infrastructure. This includes sectors such as transportation, airports, ports, bridges, communications, water management, gas supply, and electricity. Human factor in safety and security refers to issues related to human behavior that affect safety and security. In infrastructure construction, this includes actions such as worker errors, non-compliant behaviors, and malicious attacks by non-construction personnel. Behavioral computing leverages advanced algorithms to analyze and recognize human behavior. Speech emotion recognition in infrastructure construction can proactively identify and prevent potential unsafe worker behaviors. Image-based behavior recognition allows for real-time monitoring of worker actions. Intrusion detection systems can block malicious activities by unauthorized personnel. Safety and security remain a critical concern within the infrastructure construction industry. According to the State Council’s Work Safety Committee, in 2021, there were 1,015 accidents in China’s infrastructure construction sector, leading to 1,193 deaths. Compared to the previous year, these numbers represent a decrease of 11.28% and 9.89%, respectively, with an average of 3.43 deaths per 100 billion yuan of output value. The Bureau of Labor Statistics in the United States reported 1,015 deaths in the infrastructure construction industry in 2021. This reflects a 1.8% decline from the previous year, with an average of 9.1 deaths per 100,000 workers. The accidents primarily involve falls from heights, collisions with falling or moving objects, and entrapment by collapsing materials, with the majority being connected to unsafe human behaviors.
