This chapter offers guidance on the extrinsic and intrinsic reasons for pursuing doctoral studies in Catholic education. It is argues that as well as focusing on what type of research to carry and how, researchers interested in pursuing a doctorate, should also pay attention to professional outcomes after the doctorate when making the decision to enroll. For many doctoral researchers, the perspective of becoming a tenured professor is appealing. But what are the odds of this becoming a reality? Using data from the US, this chapter provides back-of-the-envelope estimates of the likelihood of new doctoral students becoming tenured professors, acknowledging the limitations of the available data to provide such estimates. Other stylized facts related to the length of study, salaries, and debt levels upon graduation are also provided.
