This chapter provides a trite summary of the salient international, regional and domestic human rights provisions pertinent to sustainable housing. The next chapter discusses policy and strategy frameworks for sustainable housing development in the BRICS nations. Policy considerations give way to law; hence both chapters should be read together. This chapter focuses on the international, regional and domestic legal frameworks for housing, citing various human rights treaties with specific reference to housing and related matters within the extended BRICS family. Several countries expressed an interest in joining the BRICS, including the USA, however, the BRICS founding nations, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa chose to extend invitations to particular nations known as the BRICS Plus Nations (BPNs) with which they found alignment. As of the 2023 Johannesburg Summit, the BRICS extended invitations to State Parties that expressed an interest in joining the regional entity, namely Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the UAE and Saudi Arabia (BPNs). Accordingly, the chapter also addresses the BPNs international, regional and domestic housing legislation. At the outset, it must be stated that some world nations do not ratify human rights treatiesHuman rights treaties because they do not necessarily agree with the ethos and spirit of particular contents. With the BPNs, Ethiopia and Egypt are situated on the African continent while Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are on the Asian continent. As such, the African and Asian regional human rights treaties, where applicable to the BPNs, are also addressed.
