It is of utmost importance as it helps in preserving lean muscle mass, wound healing, improving weight loss outcomes, imparting satiety, preventing weight regain, preserving bone health, and regulating blood sugar levels. A daily protein intake of >60 g/day has shown to be beneficial for faster recovery, smoother weight loss journey, and long-term weight maintenance. Reliance on protein supplements postoperatively is vital to meet the requirement due to calorie restriction post sleeve gastrectomy and malabsorption post gastric bypass. Protein supplement recommendation should be based on its bioavailability, total protein content/serve, and branched chain amino acid and leucine content of >5 g/serve and > 2 g/serve, respectively. However, nonadherence to protein supplementation is the most commonly observed nutritional concern due to its texture, aroma, artificial sweetener content, cost, availability, etc. For effective nutritional management and prevention of postoperative nutritional concerns related to poor protein intake, it is important to learn about the protein requirement guidelines as per the surgery type, types of protein supplements and their dosage, fortified food sources of protein, and strategies to tackle nonadherence with protein-rich foods and supplements. Protein supplement recommendations should be customized as per patient’s food preferences, palatability, tolerance, and affordability to ensure maximum adherence. Patient counselling and education remains the crux of postoperative nutritional management by the primary MBS care team. A set of follow-up protocol in order to evaluate and monitor a patient’s nutritional status, supplement and dietary adherence, and regular support group meetings are ways to improve patient outcomes.
