E-cigarettes in Malaysia: Public Health Challenges and Economic Implications
摘要
The surge in e-cigarette (e-cig) usage in Malaysia, particularly among the youth, poses a significant threat to public health as it falsely presents e-cigs as safer alternatives. These devices carry substantial health risks and contribute to market failures and economic burdens, including escalated healthcare costs and reduced productivity. To effectively address these concerns, it is imperative to enforce stricter regulations, enhance age verification, promote health warnings, and impose higher taxes on all tobacco products. Public awareness campaigns play a vital role in educating the public about the associated risks and economic implications. These measures are aimed at reducing Malaysia’s smoking prevalence to 15% by 2025 and below 5% by 2045, ultimately leading to improved public health outcomes.
