The climate and environment of Bangladesh are very fortunate to use solar energy as a renewable energy source. In one way, it diminises the use of fossil fuels and carbon emissions, and in another way, it increases the economic growth and sustainability of the planet. Although worldwide the use of solar energy is increasing to generate electricity, Bangladesh only uses 2.8% of solar energy out of a total of 3.8% of the renewable energy sources in of the country. This keeps Bangladesh too far from reaching its promise to the Climate Vulnerable Forum that it will increase its renewable energy sources by 30% and 40%, respectively, in 2031 and 2041, and to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs). As Bangladesh is a sunshine country with an average of 4–5 kWh/m2 of daily solar radiation, it can potentially keep its promise of using renewable energy by adopting comprehensive plans and policies relating to the use of solar energy. The main objective of this part is to analyze the potential of using solar energy as renewable energy in Bangladesh by highlighting current policies and strategies.
