In remote India, un-burnt mud bricks are hugely used by the local people for making houses/huts using locally available mud. These bricks suffer from durability when exposed to the weather. Many times causalities are reported during the rains due to the collapse of walls. Keeping the above problem in the eye, it was tried to bring improvement in the durability of un-burnt mud bricks by using locally available materials and experimental study data are presented in this paper. For this purpose, locally available materials such as limestone dust, bamboo leaf ash and cow dung dust were used along with mud. Limestone dust and cow dung dust were prepared using manual grinding systems. To make the system user-friendly, the mixing of materials was done manually using the traditional tribal process with the help of tools such as a spade, shovel, trowel and pick axe. Tradition brick moulding skill without compaction was followed. The bricks made from a mixture of such materials were sun-dried. Properties such as density, compressive strength, water absorption and abrasion resistance of prepared bricks were studied. The results of bricks made using lime dust, cow dung dust and bamboo leaf ash along with mud were compared with normal bricks made with mud only. The results showed that there was a 14% improvement in strength when the mud was modified with 15% limestone dust. The strength gain increased to 26% when the mud was modified with 15% limestone dust and 15% cow dung dust. Further, it gained 32% when the mud was modified with 15% limestone dust, 15% cow dung dust and 5% bamboo leaf ash. The density, water absorption and abrasion resistance of modified bricks more or less reduced in a similar trend.
