A Critical Analysis of the Characteristics of Geopolymer Bricks

Geopolymerization of waste materials can help mitigate the current environmental crisis, slow the decline of environmental reserves, and encourage the widespread use of industrial by-products and wastes. Instead of just dumping it out, one can reap these rewards. This chapter is a summary that explains geopolymerization and its use in bricks from the ground-up. Many different aspects of geopolymer, including its chemical build and structure, mechanical behavior, mechanisms involved, and the chemistry associated in its synthesis, are discussed in depth throughout this work. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the variables, such as ambient curing, moisture content, blending parameters, setting time, alkali activators concentration, etc., that affect brick properties such as durability, thermal characteristics, strength properties, bulk density, setting time, soundness, and leaching. These characteristics are elaborated upon in subsequent sections. In addition to their structural roles, geopolymers can also serve as binders, where they perform exceptionally well. Applications of geopolymerized waste products are also mentioned, in addition to the strengthening properties, micro-structural behavior, and potential future uses of geopolymer bricks discussed in this chapter.
