Analysis of Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Management Framework in India: Strategies for Improvement

The construction industry is the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions. The construction industry is predicted to exploit around 25% of wood and 40% of raw stone, gravel, and sand on a global scale each year. The building cost attributed only to materials accounts for 50–60%, and 9% of the total resources obtained are ultimately wasted. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the output of construction and demolition (C&D) waste due to rapid urbanization, considerable infrastructure development, and building projects. Construction waste management (CWM) is a significant environmental issue in many Indian towns due to the large amount of construction waste created in India, which is 150 million metric tons (MT) and represents 35–40% of the worldwide construction and demolition (C&D) waste produced each year. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has projected that India only recycles 1% of its construction and demolition (C&D) trash that is being produced. This study compares C&D waste generated using TIFAC calculations with site values. Mini cost benefit analysis also carried out to check the turnaround time in spending money for implementing modern C and D waste management strategies. Using lean and BIM as a tool for supporting the design and construction process, this paper explores the prevalent strategy in C and D waste management in India and suggests few policy frameworks in managing construction and demolition waste. Further, BIM-based approaches are proposed for reducing, reusing, recycling, and managing construction waste.
