Yang interviews a woman born in 1981, who works in a small-scale processing factory in Dongguan. She tells of how she began factory work right after high school to help pay for her younger siblings’ schooling. She lived in a workers dormitory during her first years, and while Dongguan was known as a dangerous city, she remained relatively insulated in her factory life. While she describes low wages and discrimination as a “migrant worker,” she also notes that her situation and the city itself have been improving. Now she is married and studying for her driver’s license, in the hope of someday getting a car. Eventually, she would like to move back to her hometown in Hubei province, where her child is currently being raised by her parents, and open up her own shop selling watches. After a discussion of the phenomenon of “left-behind children”—those who are raised by their grandparents in the countryside while their parents work in the city—she notes that her main goal is to provide a better life for her child.
