Yang interviews a man, Shi Haibin, born in 1980, who runs an internet company in Dongguan. After failing to get accepted to university through gaokao in 1997—before university admissions were significantly expanded—he describes how he enrolled in a private college, which essentially “sold” his entire class to a factory in Shenzhen through what it called “vocational training.” After escaping from the factory, he was arrested by the ambiguously sanctioned “public security force,” which extorted money from him. Completely destitute after his release, he slept in construction sites around Dongguan until he was finally able to secure a job at a computer company. After hard work and some lucky breaks, he was eventually able to start his own company that grew to generate an annual revenue of one million RMB. Despite this success, Shi says he stills feels part of society’s vulnerable class.
