This final chapter offers an overview and synthesis of the questions Yang has been addressing until this point—the relationship between History and the individual; the struggle against historical nihilism in the era of post-Mao market reforms; and the possibility of resisting this nihilism and sense of failure through the development of a petty-bourgeois class consciousness. Through a series of observations on a diverse potpourri of cultural productions, ranging from socialist realist cinema to contemporary Hollywood film, from Henry Miller to Takeuchi Yoshimi, Yang expresses a vague hope that the generation born in the 1980s can resist the nihilism inherent in the petty bourgeois dream. Through new efforts in writing and narrating, Yang hopes that China’s younger generations can “clarify their own social class, rectify their position in history, and forge a path where none seemed possible.”
