This interview focuses on the practical financial difficulties the man and his family face in the city: rent takes up much of their money, and the prices of apartments are too high. Their child will also start kindergarten soon, but in order for him to attend a public school, they need a local hukou (household registration), which they don’t have; they could also send him to private school, but those are too expensive. The man’s main stress in life is sorting out this problem for his son, because they refuse to send him back to the countryside as a “left-behind child.”
