Microplastic Alters Rhizosphere Microbiome: A Review

Rhizosphere is the hotspot of plant-microbe interaction. The healthy rhizosphere microbiome is essential for plant as it assists in nutrient uptake and offers protection against pathogen attack. Accumulation of microplastics in soil impacts rhizosphere microbiome by altering the soil physicochemical characteristics such as bulk density, pH, porosity, electric conductivity, enzymatic activities, and nutrient bioavailability. The size, shape, and chemical nature of plastics directly influence interaction between microorganisms and microplastics. The present chapter discusses the primary sources, fate, and impact of microplastics on microbial communities of rhizosphere and soil nutrient cycling. Further, the chapter discusses the applicability of the generated knowledge in formulating strategies for removing small-size plastic from soil. Challenges and future perspectives are also discussed in the present chapter to pave the path for future courses of research.
