Microplastic in Aquatic Habitat: Impact and Sustainable Remediation Approaches

When plastic waste is dumped in the water, it eventually breaks down into small pieces. These plastic pieces, which fall into the category of microplastics (MPs), are typically 0.05–5 mm in size, and because of their small size, aquatic species regularly utilize them. As a result, extensive MPs infiltration poses a threat to already-existing life forms and is a global problem for the aquatic environment. MPs readily bind to other harmful compounds or metals, acting as a vector for the introduction of such toxic substances into living forms. The growing contaminants polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and other polymers are harmful to all kinds of organisms. Urban wastewater flushing is the primary entry point for MPs into aquatic environments. The current book chapter focuses on the source, origin, formation, impact, and remediation strategies of microplastics in aquatic habitats.
