Textiles become more visually appealing and more marketable through the process of dyeing. Dyeing is used not only for decorative purposes but also for functional purposes. However, conventional dyeing is a water, chemical, and energy-intensive process that pollutes water, soil, air, and other elements of the environment. The global climate and biodiversity are both adversely impacted by this pollution. Researchers are investigating alternative sustainable dyeing methods that use less water, chemicals, and energy to safeguard the environment from pollution. One of them is electrochemical dyeing. Electrochemical dyeing involves either electrical modification of the substrate to be dyed or the replacement of chemicals with electrons from electricity. This chapter covers a brief introduction to conventional dyeing as well as the history of electrochemical dyeing. It also covers problems with conventional dyeing, various electrochemical dyeing techniques for water-insoluble vat, sulfur, and indigo dyes, salt-free electrochemical dyeing of cotton, low-temperature electrochemical dyeing of polyester, and electrochemical pigment dyeing. The advantages and disadvantages of electrochemical dyeing over conventional dyeing will be addressed in the remainder of this chapter. The future of electrochemical dyeing and a summary of the conversation as a whole are covered in the conclusion.
