Bio-Derived Dyes and Mordants for Greener Textile Coloration

Synthetic colorants and auxiliaries offer various advantages in terms of durability, color range, and improved functionality to meet the diverse demands of consumers. However, this industry contributes to pollution and environmental degradation and has been criticised for its significant environmental footprint. On the contrary, bio-derived dyes and auxiliaries obtained from renewable resources, such as plant extracts, microorganisms, and agricultural by-products, offer a sustainable alternative and eco-friendly approach in the textile industry. The biodegradability of the colorants derived from renewable resources aims to introduce natural compounds that are both environmentally friendly and exhibit unique properties. This characteristic aligns with the growing demand for sustainable practices in the textile industry, promoting circularity and reducing the environmental burden of textile waste. Bio-based alternatives are generally non-toxic and pose fewer health risks than their synthetic counterparts, creating a safer working environment for textile industry workers. Furthermore, the utilisation of bio-derived compounds in textile processes promotes agricultural diversification; thus, the textile industry can contribute to the economic viability of agricultural sectors. A comprehensive case study is conducted using colorants obtained from renewable resources along with bio-mordant and innocuous metallic salts to dye and print cotton, wool, silk, and hemp-cotton union fabric for product development. The results show positive outcomes, particularly in the case of printing with bio-mordant and also with clay. Using clay as a resisting material is an environmentally friendly approach, as it is sourced from nature and does not involve harmful chemicals. However, challenges like consistent results and cost-effectiveness need to be addressed further.
