Micelle Dyeing: Green Chemistry for Modern Coloration

Dyes and pigments make the world beautiful and are used as biological agents, signaling agents, corrosion inhibitors, and dye-sensitized photocells. Nowadays, all industries, including the textile industry, face environmental issues regarding hazardous dyeing materials and hazardous methods for their production and applications. Green chemistry helps to solve these environmental issues by adopting cost-effective natural or less hazardous synthetic dyes with their green production and applications. In the textile industry, various reactive dyes obtain the desired color for cellulosic materials and fibers. The conventional fixation of reactive dyes on cellulose is low. Green and sustainable techniques such as plasma technology, nanotechnology, and UV technology have been adopted to minimize excessive water, chemical additives, and other hazardous auxiliaries used in dyeing and for minimum energy requirements. Besides benign environmental methods, fabric dyeing is also done using surfactants that form reactive dye carrier micelles in solvents. Surfactants have amphiphilic properties, and when they are present above the critical micelle concentration (CMC), they form micelles in the aqueous phase and in the non-aqueous phase, which can also retain a small amount of water and act as a reactive dye carrier for dyeing. The micelle dyeing method is greener when environment-benign surfactants and non-aqueous solvents are used for micelle formation with dye solutions.
