This chapter explores the state of disability rights and policies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with particular attention to the implementation of international conventions like the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). By examining national legal frameworks, the role of advocacy groups, and the impact of Disabled People’s Organizations (DPOs), this chapter highlights both the successes and challenges in advancing disability rights. Key barriers to the implementation of disability policies include resource limitations, political will, and societal stigma, which often lead to exclusion in areas such as education, employment, and healthcare. Despite these challenges, successful examples of disability-inclusive policies in regions like Latin America offer valuable lessons for improving accessibility and social participation. This chapter concludes with a call for stronger policy integration, particularly within broader development strategies, and urges increased research to address the intersectional challenges faced by persons with disabilities in LMICs. Recommendations include enhancing accessibility, strengthening cross-sector collaboration, and integrating disability inclusion into national and global agendas, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate change adaptation.
