Pore Characteristics of Shale Reservoirs in the Ulalike Formation of the Ordovician, Western Ordos Basin

As the exploration and development of oil and gas in the Western Ordos Basin gradually deepens, there has been gratifying progress in the evaluation of shale gas resources. In order to deepen the geological understanding of this region, a study on the pore characteristics of shale reservoirs in the Ulalike Formation was conducted in this paper. Firstly, the pore types and morphology of the shale reservoir were observed using argon ion polishing technology and field-emission environmental scanning electron microscopy. Subsequently, quantitative characterization of the pore structure was carried out by testing techniques such as high-pressure mercury intrusion and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. Finally, the factors affecting the pore characteristics were analyzed from aspects such as mineral composition and total organic carbon content. The shale reservoir of the Ulalike Formation in the Western Ordos Basin is mainly composed of intergranular pores and dissolution pores, with microfractures and nanoscale pores forming a porous system. The diameter of the pore throat measured by the capillary pressure mercury intrusion method is mainly distributed in the macropore range and does not effectively characterize the information of micropores and mesopores. According to the low-temperature nitrogen adsorption experiment, the pore sizes of shale reservoirs in this area is mainly around 2 nm, consisting mainly of micropores and mesopores. In terms of pore volume and specific surface area, mesopores dominate, followed by micropores. Through the analysis of the influence factors, the pore volume and specific surface area are positively correlated with the illite content and negatively correlated with the quartz and total organic carbon content. Focusing on the shale reservoirs of the Ulalike Formation in the Western Ordos Basin, the pore characteristics and influencing factors were summarized and analyzed, which can provide reference for subsequent research on reservoir characteristics and exploration practices in the study area.
