Standards and Regulations

This chapter explores the evolving landscape of standards and regulations that govern the planning, design, operation, and integration of microgrids and distributed energy resources (DERs). It highlights the growing importance of establishing consistent, interoperable frameworks to accommodate high DER penetration while ensuring safety, reliability, and grid compatibility. Key Australian standards such as AS/NZS 4777 and AS/NZS 4755 address inverter connections and demand response capabilities, respectively. Internationally, IEEE 1547 and IEEE 2030 series set foundational guidelines for DER interconnection, smart grid interoperability, microgrid controllers, and testing. IEC standards, including the 62898 and 62257 series, provide detailed technical guidance for AC and DC microgrids, fault protection, and rural electrification. The chapter also categorises standards based on grid components, including substations, transformers, relays, and communication systems, as well as supporting technologies like electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), energy storage, digital twins, and cybersecurity. Despite this progress, gaps remain in covering emerging technologies such as grid-forming inverters and hydrogen systems, necessitating updates or new standards. A harmonised and adaptive regulatory approach is essential to support innovation while maintaining technical and operational coherence across jurisdictions. This chapter serves as a vital reference for developers, utilities, and policymakers involved in the deployment of safe and future-ready microgrid systems.
