The Critical Success Factors for Sustainable Construction Management

High energy costs, extreme weather, shortages of construction materials, client dissatisfaction, low productivity, urbanisation, and waste are confronting the construction sector. The combination of these is leading to a demand for a paradigm shift in the management of construction projects. Sustainable construction management is introduced to curtail the inadequacies and inefficiencies in conventional construction management practices. However, less is known about the scope and nuances of sustainable construction management. Thus, decision criteria for sustainable construction management are still largely based on anecdotal evidence. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the critical success factors for sustainable construction management. This research is guided by pragmatism as a research philosophy because it requires multiple research methods. The questionnaires involved closed and open-ended questions and were administered to more than 600 construction companies based on the snowballing technique. The surveys were conducted online. The questionnaire comprises 48 critical success factors for sustainable construction management practices. The data revealed that the main critical success factors for sustainable construction management practice are to ‘prevent pollution associated with construction projects’, ‘provide adequate information to the construction team’, ‘use a waste management plan’, ‘provide adequate information to the design team’, ‘use materials from sustainable sources’, ‘use renewable materials’, and ‘ensure proper health and safety management on sites.
