The construction sector is a critical pillar of global economies, significantly contributing to GDP and employment while shaping societies through housing, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development. Distinguished by its project-based, temporary nature and intricate stakeholder landscape, the sector encompasses diverse professional competencies and a workforce increasingly including women and educated youth amidst traditional reliance on male, informal, and foreign labour. Market demand is driven by demographic shifts and urbanization, significantly influenced by government policies and cultural contexts. However, the sector faces persistent challenges such as information asymmetry, inadequate working conditions, project delays, and safety vulnerabilities. This chapter argues that enhancing the sector's performance necessitates the widespread adoption of sustainable construction practices. It underscores the crucial need for all stakeholders to understand and fulfill their responsibilities to ensure projects align with sustainability benchmarks and effectively serve evolving societal needs, fostering a more environmentally sound and socially equitable built environment.
