For the successful implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the construction industry, it is imperative to understand the factors that drive its adoption in construction organisations. However, the existing BIM implementation research does not provide detailed insights into BIM adoption drivers in the Indian construction industry. Knowledge of adoption drivers could increase BIM uptake in developing countries such as India and help potential adopter organisations avoid mistakes during their BIM implementation. The present study identified 22 drivers for successful BIM adoption in construction organisations based on a comprehensive literature review. Next, the drivers were ranked based on 93 completed survey responses from 71 organisations. Finally, an independent samples t-test was conducted to examine similarities and differences in the respondents’ perceptions of various drivers. The results show that the top five drivers of BIM adoption in the Indian construction industry are (1) market competitiveness, (2) promoting the company’s image and reputation, (3) good information technology (IT) infrastructure, (4) organisational emphasis on innovation and technology adoption, and (5) improving company responsiveness to customers. The findings could help contractors, clients, and other stakeholders understand the influencing factors driving BIM adoption decisions. The study contributes to theory and practice by examining BIM adoption drivers from the perspectives of potential adopters in developing countries such as India.
