Laboratory Investigation of Recycled Concrete Aggregates (RCA) in the Bituminous Layer

Several construction and demolition projects are carried out on a regular basis all over the world, and these activities are rising at an alarming rate. This generates a massive amount of waste materials known as Construction and Demolition Trash (C&D waste). This study focused on identifying the effects of RCA on the performance of conventional bituminous mixtures. This research will not only significantly impact the construction of the bituminous layer, but it will also provide a suitable alternative to the conventional aggregates for the construction of the pavement. The study also aims to identify the behavior and performance of the recycled concrete aggregates in the bituminous layer of the pavement. Here, C&D waste materials i.e., RCA was used as aggregates along with bitumen with the grade VG40, and were mixed with the virgin aggregates with different proportion (25%, 50% and 100%). Various basic property tests were conducted, such as Particle Size Distribution, Los Angeles Abrasion Test, Specific Gravity Test, and Flakiness Index Test. The Marshall Mix design was performed on the control mix (0% RCA), as well as RCA-modified bituminous mixes with RCA content of 50%, 75%, and 100%. Further, for investigating the performance of RCA blended bituminous mixtures, various advanced tests such as Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) test, Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR), Cantabro test, and Boiling Water tests were conducted. From the volumetric properties and various performance tests, it was found that RCA can be potentially used in the partial replacement of virgin aggregates.
