Evaluation of Efficiency of Natural Coagulants for the Removal of Suspended Solids from the Dairy Industry Effluent Discharge

The dairy sector is among the most polluting, both in terms of the amount of effluents it produces and in characteristics of the industry. Precipitation, coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and chemical reaction are techniques used to clean waste water. Due to its high cost, each approach has its own advantages and application restrictions. One of the vital aspects in the treatment regimen and chemical reactions is coagulation. Each method has its own merits and demerits in applications because of their cost. One of the key elements in the treatment procedure is the coagulant. Aluminium and iron (III) salts are the two basic coagulants that are most frequently utilized. Recent research have highlighted a number of disadvantages of applying aluminium salts, including Alzheimer's disease, neurotoxicity, cancer, etc. and a significant volume of sludge. Recently, various natural coagulants that are easily biodegradable and produce less volumetric sludge have been used. They are made from plants, animals, and microorganisms. The amount of sludge is 20–30% of the alum-treated amount. In this study we used the seed powders of drumstick, fenugreek, and common bean as natural coagulants to reduce the turbidity present in the dairy wastewater. The studies were done with a standard jar test apparatus. Initially, to get the optimum coagulant dosage possible for treating dairy effluent. The result from the experiment shows that at 23 ℃ the BOD was 450 before treatment, it reduced to 303.75 after treatment resulting in 32.5% removal efficiency. Finally, it was observed that dairy wastewater had a 48% COD removal efficiency.
