The excavation of the underground sarira palace at the Grand Baoen Temple is one of the most abundant and difficult archaeological excavation projects in Nanjing in past twenty years. Many precious cultural relics, such as Qibao gilded-pagoda and the Buddha’s crest bones, have been unearthed, the largest proportion of precious relics are silk textiles, such as spun silk, coarse silk fabric, plain silk cloth with twill pattern, damask silk, rib fabric and yarn fabric. Decorative techniques include dyeing, embroidery, painting, mud gold, ink calligraphy, etc. Apart from the corrosion phenomenon formed by soil, rust, wax residues of cocoon and textile wrapped perfume, most of these textiles are in good condition, soft texture and bright color. Based on the analysis of preservation environment, this paper summarizes the essential characteristics affected by light corrosion on the silk fabrics from the underground sarira palace of the Grant Baoen Temple site over the past thousand years.
