Coastal cities are at the forefront of environmental vulnerability due to their geographical location. They face many hazards, including severe flooding, storm surges, and rising river flows. These events can devastate coastal regions, causing significant infrastructural damage and disrupting livelihoods. This chapter focuses on developing a comprehensive approach for evaluating the environmental vulnerability of Kochi, a coastal city in Kerala, India. Kochi, like many coastal cities, is threatened by environmental hazards like flooding, storm surges, and socio-environmental challenges arising from its geographical location. These threats are exacerbated by the presence of sensitive locations and environmental factors. The study aims to analyze the city’s distinct features and environmental factors, including existing pollution levels, shoreline change using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) tool, and the physical susceptibility of the area to environmental hazards. This analysis underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to managing the city’s growth and expansion. The study acknowledges that coastal city vulnerability increases due to demographic and economic expansion into sensitive areas. By integrating methodologies for coastal vulnerability assessment, adaptation strategies, and socio-environmental considerations, the study aims to enhance Kochi’s preparedness and resilience to environmental challenges. This comprehensive approach will inform the development of effective strategies for managing future environmental risks and ensuring the city’s sustainable development.
