Fiji and other nations in the Global South are experiencing fast urbanisation and the effects of climate change. This chapter looks at ways to make their urban centres more resilient to these challenges. Issues such as urban heat islands and severe weather occurrences are examined, and strategies tailored to individual regions are discussed, such as ecosystem-based solutions, community-based adaptation, and climate-integrated urban design. Sustainable urban development strategies and frameworks of Fiji are discussed, including the National Climate Change Policy and the Green Growth Framework. In this chapter, we’ll look at how cities like Suva tackle urban carbon emissions by implementing green infrastructure, renewable energy, and better transit options. Although there has been some improvement, there are still obstacles to overcome during implementation, such as inefficient administration, lack of resources, and outdated technology. Amongst the suggestions are the creation of well-defined policies, the optimisation of administrative procedures, and the correct distribution of funds for climate adaptation. It is critical and doable to construct climate-resilient metropolitan centres in the Global South; nevertheless, this takes continuous dedication, creativity, and coordination amongst several stakeholders, as Fiji’s experience shows. The lessons learnt could be very useful for other developing nations dealing with climate change and urbanisation.

摘要
