Assessing the Nexus Between Heat Island and Air Pollution Toward Sustainable Environment of Industrial Regions in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India

This chapter explores the dual challenges of heat islands and air pollution in Raipur and its surrounding industrial regions. The research examines the physical, social, and environmental conditions of industrial zones, with a focus on hazards and their spatial impacts. A heat island map was generated using key control parameters such as building density, land surface temperature, vegetation cover, water bodies, wind patterns, land use, and humidity. Similarly, an air pollution map was created, incorporating pollutants such as PM10, PM2.5, CO, CO2, NOx, and SO2, alongside air quality parameters. The air quality index was quantified to identify and analyze the pollution hotspots, termed as “pollution islands,” within the study area. The study utilizes scientific tools, including ArcGIS and the Kriging method, to analyze the relationship between heat islands and pollution islands. Through the identification of hotspot areas in affected villages and an assessment of socio-environmental vulnerabilities, the research identifies the zones most at risk. Further, a comprehensive environmental risk assessment, highlighting the high-risk areas. Based on these findings, the study proposes a conceptual framework for mitigating the impacts of environmental risks and suggests planning strategies aimed at promoting sustainability within the region.
