Landfill Site Selection Directives: A Landscape-Centric Perspective in the Context of Kerala

As urbanization accelerates, the effective management of solid waste and the strategic placement of landfills are considered as crucial environmental concerns. This chapter focuses on the landfill site selection directives, in the context of Kerala, India, with a landscape-centric approach. The study, centered on the Brahmapuram landfill site in Ernakulam district, employs Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to highlight the potential of a landscape-centric approach to transform landfills into assets that benefit both the environment and society. By evaluating the impacts of landfills on adjacent land and water bodies, we emphasize the importance of holistic environmental consideration in site selection processes. Based on case study comparisons and existing literature, the research proposes site selection directives derived from the AHP methodology. These guidelines consider factors like geology, hydrology, and vegetation and thus these directives aid in choosing landfill locations with minimal environmental disruption. This chapter contributes to the development of a systematic framework for landfill site selection, offering valuable insights for policymakers and planners. The proposed directives provide a practical tool for assessing potential sites and guiding decision-making processes, ultimately promoting sustainable waste management practices and environmental preservation in Kerala and beyond.
