Imaging Perspective in Pediatric Tumors: CNS Tumors

Neuroimaging is an integral part of pediatric brain tumors, both in evaluation and management. Imaging forms the bridge between clinical phenotype and histopathological genotype with the direct depiction of the natural history and/or the treatment effects. The supratentorial brain tumors are deliberated in this chapter according to their location. The basics of imaging methods and typical patterns of various tumors are given apt importance. Since the children’s brain is not a small adult’s brain, the tumoral imaging characteristics, problems, and artifacts involved are unique and disproportionate. The recent advances in imaging sciences are inching toward the goal of reaching the precise molecular diagnosis in tumors of the pediatric brain as detailed in the recent fifth edition, World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of CNS Tumors. A clear understanding of the imaging approach and nuances not only aids in precise timely diagnosis but also results in efficient treatment avoiding complications.
