Microbial Metabolomics: A Futuristic Approach in Biotechnology
摘要
This chapter delves into the transformative role of microbial metabolomics in biotechnology, analyzing how it provides insights into microbial metabolic pathways, interactions, and applications in a variety of sectors. Beyond the analysis of genomic or transcriptomics data, microbial metabolomics provides a deeper knowledge of microbial systems by analyzing bioactive molecules generated by microbes. The chapter deals with the key analytical methods that allow for accurate metabolite identification and quantification, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gas and liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (GC-MS, LC-MS). It also discusses how strain improvement, bioprocess optimization, biofuel generation, and pharmaceutical development are all influenced by metabolomic data. The promise of metabolomics in synthetic biology and systems biotechnology is highlighted, along with its integration with other omics techniques like proteomics and genomics. In environmental biotechnology, microbial metabolomics serves as an essential tool for agricultural applications that enhance crop yield and soil health, as well as for waste treatment and bioremediation. The chapter concludes with future prospects, including the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in metabolomics data analysis, which is expected to enhance data interpretation and open new avenues for customized biotechnology applications.
