The non-incisional or minimally invasive lifting methods mentioned earlier are all based on surgical facelift techniques (rhytidectomy), and the ultimate goal of these procedures is to achieve results comparable to those of rhytidectomy. Rhytidectomy was first introduced over 100 years ago with skin excision, and the technique of only subcutaneous facelift through skin flap undermining became widely utilized; however, it had limitations in effecting changes in deeper tissues. The significant advancement in rhytidectomy came with the discovery of the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) structure. It was revealed that the SMAS and platysma are connected in the same layer, and separating this layer for movement apart from the skin led to better outcomes, establishing a standard for surgical rhytidectomy. Subsequent research on retaining ligaments further deepened the surgical approach to rhytidectomy.
