X-rays, CT and MRI often are among some of the investigations used frequently in the management of patients. These investigations require radiation exposure, IV contrast administration and use of strong magnetic fields which can have adverse side effects, especially in the vulnerable population. The foetus in a pregnant woman, children and young persons must be specially cared for and imaged gently. Wherever possible non-radiation and non-contrast studies should be used. The harmful effect of MRI is lesser than X-rays and CT scans. Hence ultrasonography and MRI should be substituted, wherever possible. However, if it is a matter of choosing the most appropriate investigation in a given situation, there should be no hesitation in using X-rays and CT scans. The radiation and contrast-related risk may be much less than the lifesaving advantage, these investigations can offer.

摘要
