There are often many shadows in the CT images which are unrelated to the part of the body being examined. These shadows may degrade image quality, and produce spurious additions in the image which can be mistaken for a pathology. These shadows may even mask a pathological finding. They are called artefacts and are produced due to various causes. Recognizing and eliminating or minimizing them, wherever possible, is important. Both the radiologist and the technologist must be able to recognize artifactual shadows and take measures to discard them or minimize their effect.
