Redesign of IRCTC App for Improved User Experience
摘要
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation—IRCTC—is one of the most widely used websites and mobile apps for rail ticket booking for travel within India and has no competitor within the country. Hence, the UI and UX design becomes very important for improved usability for millions of users. Detailed studies on customer feedback, research repositories, social media, Google Scholar, JSTOR, and ACM were carried out for literature study. Contextual interviews were conducted with 17 participants between 18 and 65 years of age. It was found that new users struggle a lot in discovery and navigation, most users use the app frequently, few users reported issues with payments and refunds, users lacked clarity in options for booking selection process, small-sized buttons, captcha issues, and automatic logouts, many often leave the app without completing their tasks, and many reported frustration while using the UI and its complexities. Apps from the USA, China, Germany, and UK were studied to gain design insights, and heuristic evaluation of existing IRCTC UI was carried out. It was found that current design of the IRCTC app is cluttered and not aesthetically pleasing. Text size and color of the header and other sections are inconsistent, making it difficult to read, CTA buttons are often too small, there are no back buttons, size and appearance of CTA buttons vary, and placement of information changes creating confusion for users. Following this, a new UI was designed and usability test was carried out the same respondents as in the previous study. Usability study revealed that users found the redesigned UI less frustrating, easy to navigate, consistent in graphics (font and colors), smooth interaction, understandable, and easier to go back to the previous task. The proposed redesign aims to enhance the user experience and increase the usability and functionality of the IRCTC app for practical implementation.
