Importance of Communication Design for Strengthening Craft Identity

The world of communication design has seen a massive change in recent times in terms of colors, typography, design elements, and advertising on both digital and printed mediums. The present paper discusses the various elements of communication design with respect to the craft sector in India—branding and visual communication guidelines that brands follow to become more approachable to the Indian customer. The focus will be on identity design, packaging design, washcare symbols, advertisement semantics, and website and app design. Identity design elaborates upon elements and principles of design graphics for the domain of advertising. Packaging design elaborates upon the need for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging that caters to customer needs. Washcare symbols form an integral part of craft products mostly, textile and leather products, and are often found missing. It is essential to incorporate washcare labels as prescribed for better maintenance of products. Website and app design forms an excellent platform for information about the brand and its products and its retail. App-based retail is very popular among textile and craft brands these days. It is essential to capture and retain user’s interest on web and app-based services for maximum reachability and sale. Semantics of advertisements have been compared with elaborate examples to understand the psyche of the customer base. The paper summarizes into guidelines that designers may follow for creating a new brand identity for print and digital medium contemporarily.
