To demonstrate the shock layer enlargement in MHD aerobraking, we performed the Schlieren imaging and interferometric measurement around a magnet model using JAXA's HEK-X large expansion tube with argon test gas, which can generate the ultra-high-speed flow at 9 km/s. The Schlieren imaging and interferometer showed MHD shock layer enlargements of about 19% and 16%, respectively. However, the CFD validation predicted that the MHD shock layer enlargement would be about one-half to one-third of the experimental values.
