Sphingolipids are found in all mammalian cell membranes and in plasma lipoproteins. They act as structural and functional (numerous biological/physiological functions) elements. The cornerstone of sphingolipids is long-chain sphingosine, which can be N-acylated by different fatty acids (mainly palmitoyl-CoA), leading to ceramide formation (Fig. 2.1).
